{C2In this section we will cover the message subsystem.
The message system allows you to send and receive mail to the Sysop, all users
or a specific user. It is undoubtedly the most used feature of any bulletin
board system.
The following message subsystem commands are available:
{C3MAIN Command E - Enter Messages{C2
This command gives you the power to transform your thoughts into electronic
messages.
You will be asked to whom you want to send the message to when you select the
"{C3E{C2" command. Enter "{C3A{C2" if you want to address the message to all users,
or "{C3S{C2" to send the message to the Sysop. You can also address the message to an
individual or group (e.g., "John Doe" or "all wordstar users"). If the
addressee is not recognized by RBBS-PC, you will be given a chance to re-enter
the name.

You will then be asked the subject of your message. A maximum of 25
characters is permitted for a subject title. If you do not enter a subject,
RBBS-PC will assume you want to exit the "{C3E{C2" command.
Finally, you will be asked for the message protection. The message protection
options are:
{C3U{C2 - pUblic. Message that can be READ BY ANYONE but can only be
KILLED ONLY by sender, addressee, and SYSOP.
{C3R{C2 - pRivate. The message can only be read (and killed) by the sendor, the
addressee and the SYSOP.
{C3P{C2 - Password. The message can be read and killed only by persons who
can give the password you attach to this message, and the SYSOP.
{C3?{C2 - Prints this summary

When all information is entered, you will be in control of RBBS-PC's line
editor. You can type your message, or press {C3[ENTER]{C2 on a blank line to
invoke various editing commands. From there you can also quit or send your
message.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. Simply addressing mail to an individual does not restrict who can read the
message. To limit access to the message, you must invoke either the
({C3P{C2)assword or p({C3R{C2)ivate security options.
2. RBBS-PC is equipped with a line-based editor. Press the {C3[Enter]{C2 key twice
to call up the editor functions ({C3A{C2)bort, {C3C{C2)ontinue, {C3D{C2)elete, {C3E{C2)dit,
{C3I{C2)nsert, {C3L{C2)ist, {C3M{C2)argin, and {C3S{C2)ave).
{C3A{C2 - Abort without saving the message.
{C3C{C2 - Continue. Enter more lines of message.
{C3D{C2 - Delete line(s) of the message.
{C3E{C2 - Edit a line of the message.
{C3I{C2 - Insert line(s) into the message.
{C3L{C2 - List the entire message.
{C3M{C2 - Set the right text margin.

{C3R{C2 - Revise the message header (msg subject)
{C3S{C2 - Save the message. This option must
be used in order to send the message.
{C3?{C2 - Print this information
{C3MAIN Command K - Kill message(s){C2
This command is used to erase one or more messages. Only the sender, addressee
or the Sysop can kill a message.
After you enter the "{C3K{C2" command, RBBS-PC will prompt you for the message
number(s). Just enter one or more message numers, separated by spaces. If you
do not have proper security to erase the message, RBBS-PC will inform you.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. You are encouraged to leave messages, but also to eliminate old messages
that are no longer useful. RBBS-PC will periodically purge old messages to
prevent the system from becoming cluttered.

{*0{C1Press RETURN to continue, {C4{FN {C2

{*B
2. You can kill a message as soon as you read it. The "{C3K{C2" option while
reading messages accomplishes this.
3. If you inadvertently delete a message that you want retained on the system,
the Sysop may be able to recover it. Leave a message to the Sysop with the
message number you want recovered as soon as possible, as recovery is only
possible shortly after the message was deleted.

{C3MAIN Command P - Personal Mail Scan{C2
This command will display the numbers of all messages that have either been
entered by you or directed specifically to you. Messages that have been left to
all users (called public messages) are not listed following a "{C3P{C2" command.
Messages marked with "{C3*{C2" are private messages.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. RBBS-PC also tells you if you have any personal mail when you log on the
system.
2. You can read all new messages addressed TO you by using the command "{C3R T S{C2"
(<{C3R{C2>ead messages <{C3T{C2>o you <{C3S{C2>ince you were last on).
3. You can rapidly identify the messages you would like to read with the {C3S{C2)can
and {C3P{C2)ersonal mail commands.
4. The {C3S{C2)can command lists the numbers of public as well as personal messages.

{C3MAIN Command R - Read Messages{C2
This command allows you to read messages left by other callers. This command
has many options that you can use to specify what messages you wish to read. To
read messages, you will specify a RANGE, and a FILTER. The RANGE tells RBBS-PC
what messages to show you (E.g. all messages left since you last read them).
The FILTER further narrows the messages in the RANGE that you will see (E.g.
only messages addressed to YOU).
Range and Filter options are typed on the message READ command line, which will
look something like:
{C3Msg # 1-100 (H)elp,S)ince,L)ast,T)o,F)rom,M)ine, text [Q]uit)?{C2
The "Msg # 1-100" tells you the first and last message number available to
read. The other items in the prompt are examples of Range and Filter options.
The complete list of options follows:

message you read during this or previous sessions).
{C3n-{C2 = backward from message number n
{C3n+{C2 = forward from message number n
{C3L{C2 = Start with LAST message left, and work backwards.
FILTER options:
{C3F{C2 = Only mail From you
{C3T{C2 = mail To you specifically (or to ALL)
{C3M{C2 = My (your) mail. From you or to you.
{C3<text>{C2 = only messages with specified text in them. The TO/FROM & SUBJ
as well as the text of the message will be searched for <text>.
Note: If the text you wish to search for is a number, enclose it
in quotes (ex. "100") to distinguish it from a RANGE.

in the message (or in the TO, FROM or SUBJECT).
{C3R 10 20 S{C2 Read message 10, then 20, then ALL new messages.
The "More" prompt will appear after a message is read. You will then make one
of the following selections:
{C3Y{C2: or {C3[Enter]{C2 to continue, {FN to read or scan messages.
{C3N{C2: if you do not wish to display additional messages.

{C3F{C2: Forward a copy of this message to someone else.
{C3K{C2: to erase the message you just read before continuing.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. Range and Filter options can be used in many combinations. Feel free to
experiment, and ask the Sysop if you have any problems.
2. Messages are numbered consecutively so that the most recently entered
messages have the highest numbers.

{C3MAIN Command S - Scan messages{C2
This command allows you to quickly review messages. Scan displays the message
number, sender and receiver name, date and subject of each message on a single
line. You can specify which messages to scan. The most common useful options
are:
{C3S{C2 (or {C3*{C2) = forward from where you last read
{C3L{C2 = backwards from the last message sent
{C3F{C2 = just the mail From you
{C3T{C2 = just the mail To you (or to ALL)
{C3M{C2 = just mail FROM or TO you
{C3xxxx-{C2 = backward from message number xxxx
{C3xxxx+{C2 = forward from message number xxxx
{C3<text>{C2 = only messages with <text> in them.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. For more information on spcifying messages to scan, read the help on the
{C3R{C2)ead command.

2. To see only a list of the message numbers and topics, use the {C3T{C2)opic
scan command.
{C3MAIN Command T - TOPIC Scan messages{C2
This command allows you to quickly review messages. TOPIC Scan displays the
message number and topic of messages you specify. The most common options to
specify messages are:
{C3S{C2 (or {C3*{C2) = forward from where you last read
{C3L{C2 = backwards from the last message sent
{C3F{C2 = just the mail From you
{C3T{C2 = just the mail To you (or to ALL)

{ON 09
{==STOP
{END
{M! STOP
{END ON
{*B
2. To see more information than TOPIC Scan gives, use the {C3S{C2)can command.
{C3MAIN Command V - View conference mail{C2
This command checks conferences you are a member of, reports the number of new
messages and whether any are addressed to you.
The View command gives you the option to {C3J{C2)oin the displayed conference,
i.e. make it your current message base, or {C3U{C2)njoin, which means to remove
you from the conference.
{C4TIPS:{C2
1. View is the command you will normally use on boards that have multiple
message bases, in order to determine where you have mail waiting. A listing
of new mail is normally presented on logon, though not with option to join
then.
2. {C3V{C2)iew reports only new mail addressed to you. You way want to join the
conferences to read public mail to all or to other individuals.

3. {C3V{C2)iew will not report on conferences you have not joined. Use the
{C3J{C2)oin command to join a conference for the first time.
This concludes the Message Subsystem Tutorial. Please feel free to address any
questions concerning messages to the Sysop.
